The theme for our travel pics this week is B – for Bridges.
Today, it’s Tower Bridge, in London.
You know the old song about “London Bridge is Falling Down”? This is, despite common misconception, NOT that bridge.
In fact London Bridge was sold to an American many years ago. This, on the other hand, is probably the most well-known bridge in London.
It is a ‘bascule’ bridge – ie the lower deck can be raised to allow shipping through. But under normal circumstanced, that deck is the A100 road .. and both cars and pedestrians can use it at any time that the drawbridge is not raised.
But the upper deck, 40m above the river’s surface, can only be visited as part of the Tower Bridge Exhibition, for a fee.
The bright blue colour has only been used since the ’80s .. but it is certainly striking.
