The theme for our travel pics this week is P for Pacific Islands.
For Tuesday, an unusual image – this one is at Port Vila, in Vanuatu.
When Tropical Cyclone Pam lashed Vanuatu in March 2015, it devastated the island nation with winds of more than 250km/hr – and the capital Port Vila, didn’t escape.
This picture was taken more than 6 months later, and shows vessels that were simply tossed ashore in the harbour .. these are on Iririki Island, as you take a water-taxi from the cruise ship wharf into town.
We were there again in February – nearly 12 months after Pam – and while some boats have been removed from the harbour-front, these wrecks remained
EDIT: It appears that the ferry wreck in the foreground actually predates Cyclone Pam . it was abandoned by an overseas investor who went bankrupt.
The wrecks alongside, however, are a mixture of abandoned and cyclone damaged vessels.
