Trafalgar Falls – The Mother and The Father

This week, our Travel pics series is D for Dominica.

We’ve mentioned that Dominica doesn’t get as many tourists as other Caribbean nations, partly because it has so few beaches, and is largely a volcanic island – quite steep and hilly.

But what that means is that there ARE some lovely sights to  be seen in the mountains and rainforests – like the Trafalgar Falls.

The falls are about a 20 minute drive from Roseau, in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a World Heritage listed park which contains hot-water springs, freshwater lakes, 50 fumaroles, five volcanoes – and even a ‘Boiling Lake’.

It also contains Titou Gorge, and the twin Trafalgar Falls – known locally as The Mother and The Father.

The Mother (on the right in our picture) is the shorter of the two, but she is wider, and flows strongly all year round. The Father, on the left, is taller – but is more erratic, depending on rainfall.

Those who hike to the Father can apparently visit hot springs near the falls – the track was damaged by 2015’s Tropical Storm Erika but reviews at TripAdvisor seem to suggest that they’ve been reopened.
