Travel Pics Theme: C for Churches. Santo Domingo’s Basilica Maria

Basilica Maria Santo Domingo

The theme for our ‪‎travel pics this week is C for Churches.

Today, it’s the Basilica Cathedral of Santa María la Menor in Zona Colonial, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

This is the oldest cathedral in the Americas – begun just 20 years after Christopher Columbus stumbled across the West Indies, while searching for Japan.

This shot was taken as we wandered around the cathedral, on Good Friday, while locals also wandered about – forming apparently random groups, singing hymns, and then breaking up and wandering away, only to reform and sing more chants. It was … interesting 🙂
