The theme for our travel pics this week is L for London – and the images all come from our visit to see our son in 2010.
First up is the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens. It was built on the instructions of Queen Victoria to honour her consort, Prince Albert, who died of typhoid in 1861.
The edifice took nearly 15 years to finish – and cost the equivalent of 22 million dollars in today’s currency.
It’s ostentatious, and gothic, and arguably gauche – but its also impressive, even for a confirmed republican like me 🙂
