The theme for our travel pics this week is J, for Jungles (and rainforests).
For Tuesday, let’s head to Fiji, and The Garden of the Sleeping Giant.
This is a botanical garden first established by Hollywood actor Raymond Burr – mostly to grow his beloved orchids. (Who knew ‘Perry Mason’ was an orchid-lover?)
There are more than two thousand orchids growing in these gardens, which are in the foothills of the Nausori Highlands about half an hour north of Nadi.
The Sleeping Giant in the name is a mountain formation which resembles a sleeping, slightly rotund, man – and when the clouds are clinging to his ‘belly’, locals say it is like he’s pulled the blankets up 🙂
The gardens also feature hundreds of local Fijian native plants – and are centred around a beautiful lily pond, seen here.
Unfortunately, we’ve lost the original, and only have this 600×800 version that we had saved at Picasaweb. 😦
